Women's Studies Degree Programs

Academic Advising

*NEW* Advising Instructions for Students, Spring 2008 (WORD doc)

In the Women's Studies Program, it is the responsibility of each student to present evidence that the Women's Studies and University Student Learning Outcomes have been achieved.  At the first advising session, the student is given lists of these learning outcomes and the description of the portfolio that the student will compile during the degree program.  Initial plans will be discussed with the student about how these outcomes will be achieved through courses and other experiences.  From that point, advising sessions consist of the following:

  1. Students come with their DARS report so that their progress on requirements of the major, college, and university can be monitored;
  2.  Students turn in to the advisor (then into portfolio) their reflections on the courses that they are currently taking and how they see that they are contributing to their achievement of the Women’s Studies and University Student Learning Outcomes;
  3. Students and advisors discuss what courses and/or experiences are lacking in the achievement of the Outcomes; and
  4. A plan is made for the next semester that is based on the goal of achieving all of the Outcomes by graduation.
