Dreams Do Fulfill God’s Work
Readings for the Week of October 3-9
Focus: God gives us dreams to remind us of His promise for salvation if only we are obedient to Him.
Throughout the Old Testament and New Testament, God uses dreams to foretell the future and to confirm God’s wishes and purposes for our lives. The book of Daniel reveals several dreams and visions and the second half reveals future dreams and vision, and is primarily prophesy.
Nebuchadnezzar’s dream is revealed in Daniel 2 and tells us that God’s kingdom ultimately would conquer the four [ worldly] kingdoms believed to be Babylon, Media-Persian Empire, Greece, and Rome. Later in that chapter, Daniel presents and interprets other dreams and visions related to advancing the kingdom of God and defeat of others.
God Speaks To Us through Dreams
Sometimes
God will use a dream to speak to you. In this regard, dreams can be
instructional, informing, and enlightening. God asks us to be patient and listen
for his instructions for and interpretations of your dreams and visions.
Dreams Have a Purpose
God gives us dreams and visions for many reasons. Christians are wise if they consider why God allows dreams and visions to occur. Consider that four elements are important to understanding God’s purpose for your dreams and visions.
1. Dreams reveal God’s plans. (Gen. 37:6)
2. Dreams can foretell real events. (Gen. 40)
3. Interpretation of dreams is left to God (Gen. 40: 8)
4. Dreams show God’s superiority over man (Gen. 41).
Application. Give yourself permission to trust God this week to handle your dreams and visions. Consider keeping a journal of your daily or weekly dreams including the ones that you have during your sleep time. Pick one dream or vision to be your focus this week. Pray for this dream each day this week and ask God for direction to fulfill this dream.
Prayer. Dear Lord, Today, I praise your greatness, even when I am unclear if you are present. Quiet my anxiety and remove my doubt to that I may have dreams and visions. Help me to restore my trust in You to fulfill my dreams. These things I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
