Social and demographic impact of the Nothern Transylvanian Highway Project in Romania

The creation of a modern infrastructure is one of the basic conditions for the modernization of Romania, within which the construction of a complete system of highways is paramount. The Romanian Government adopted the Traffic Network Chapter of the National Territorial Development Plan, which includes the future highway tracks. Although the social, environmental, cultural and economic impact of the imminent highway constructions encompassing almost the whole Romanian territory is difficult to evaluate, it will unquestionably be of great significance. The main objective of the research program is to analyze the social and economic consequences and the environmental impact of Transylvanian highway constructions.

The alteration of society and the economy has generated significant migration in Romania as well. The investigation of the connection between migration and modernization is the main research subject of this project. Changes in the demographic composition of a certain area are closely related to the efficiency of the area (competitive feature). In-migration to prospering regions results in population decline in lagging regions. This basic formula occurs in several variations, and results in diverse demographic processes in different areas. It is not easy to state which areas are the winners and which are the laggards from a demographic perspective. Similarly, many questions are propounded concerning the evolution of the population’s reproduction. Demographic analyses provide a base for the comparison of human resources in different regions.

The research project will consist of work of researchers in disciplinary groups, and through a constant coordination, members, and especially group leaders will discuss the main findings of their groups in order to maintain the common framework and the interdisciplinary character of the project. At the end of the project (18 months) a common conference will be organized by the project coordinator. The novelty of the project stands precisely in its complexity given by the multiple approaches it strives for. Coordinating such an interdisciplinary team and opening up to different disciplines is not too common in research projects, and it unquestionably points to the future trends in sciences.
