Important note: We list countries according to their contemporary name and status. Many of these countries were parts of former federal states, such as Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia or the Soviet Union. In most cases, however, statistics were collected at the subnational level, and sometimes even published accordingly. Currently nations publish historical data according to their contemporary legal status. (The Soviet Union broke up in 1991, Slovenia and Croatia was recognized in 1992, Czechoslovakia was parted in 1993, and Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina became independent in 1995.)
