Spencer D. Wood

I am interested in inequality with a particular penchant for historical inquiries. Substantively the bulk of my work concerns the experiences of rural Blacks under Jim Crow, through the Civil Rights era, and today. Although I have also worked in the areas of the sociology of knowledge, intellectual history, rural sociology, and the sociology of agriculture. In my dissertation I examined how landowning rural Blacks undergird key components of the Mississippi civil rights movement. I am currently working on two related projects. The first is a book length study of black culture in Memphis with a focus on the roles of carnival, music, and the arts. The second is a project documenting memories of violence among Mississippians who grew up during Jim Crow. You can find out more about my interests and work on my personal web page here http://www-personal.ksu.edu/~sdwood/ . Please feel free to contact me via email, phone, or post.
