Born in Washington D.C. and raised in Michigan, McBride first pursued a career in painting. After her BA, she studied art at Boston U and began writing for the Christian Science Monitor , leading to newspaper and magazine assignments in Africa and China . Since 1981, she has worked with Maine Indian communities and curated museum exhibitions on Native American art. An award-winning author, her numerous publications include well-known books such as Women of the Dawn and Molly Spotted Elk: A Penobscot in Paris . She coauthored Asticou's Island Domain , plus three anthropology textbooks and the Audubon Field Guide to African Wildlife . McBride has taught anthropology and ethnographic writing at Principia College , SALT Center for Documentary Field Studies and KSU. In 1999 the Maine State Legislature officially recognized her contributions to Native women's history. McBride is an advisor for the Kansas Humanities Council and board member of the Women's World Summit Foundation ( Geneva , Switzerland ).
