EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEMS
How will K-State notify me about a crisis or
an emergency?
K-State officials use the following means of communication to
alert the university community about a crisis, danger or natural disaster:
Reverse 911 telephone
calling system. A 30-second recorded message
from K-State Police sent to cell phones and land lines. Offers a summary of the
situation and instructions.
Text messaging. Sent to cell phones of students, staff and faculty on the Manhattan and Salina
campuses.
Web page override. All Web pages at www.k-state.edu automatically redirected to
emergency information page.
E-mail advisory.
Police public address
systems. Located on K-State Police vehicles.
Campus carillon. In the Anderson
Hall tower, used as public address system.
Tornado warning sirens.
Local media. K-State provides information and updates to area radio and cable
television stations.

In an emergency, who is responsible for
alerting the campus?
The campus threat-assessment team includes representatives of the
offices of student life and public safety and other senior administrators. When
the team verifies that an emergency exists, the vice president for
administration and finance will disseminate information to campus.

Recommended responses:
If you are inside a campus building, go to a central part of the
building on the lowest floor and away from windows.
Fire
Communication channels:
Smoke alarms and fire alarm

Recommended responses:
Contact: Pull the fire alarm to
evacuate the building if alarm isnt sounding.
Evacuate: Leave at once, following the
evacuation plan for your building. Use stairs, not the elevator. Proceed to a
location away from the building and emergency vehicles.
Chemical release/spill
Communication channels:
Reverse 911 telephone call
Local media
K-State police public address system
Recommended responses:
Contact: Call 911; notify academic
department or group.
Affected area: Close and seal windows,
vents and doors if this can be done safely.
Evacuate: Leave quickly to an outside
area, upwind from the spill area.
Terroristic threats
Includes suspicious materials, air contaminants, bomb threats and
biological agents.

Recommended responses:
Contact: Call 911. If you can do so
safely, inform building occupants. Leave the room immediately, and close the
door behind you. Leave the building and congregate outside the building in a
predetermined place. Stay there until police clear the building.

Recommended responses:
Contact: Call 911. If you can do so
safely, inform building occupants. Then lock doors, block windows and close
blinds; silence ring tones on phones; turn off lights, audio and computers.
Seek protective cover. Place signs in exterior windows to identify your
location. Stay in place until police clear the building.
What happens after an emergency?
K-States dean of student life office will coordinate trauma
debriefing or necessary human services to assist those involved in the
emergency. The dean of student life staff members will meet the needs of
parents and other relatives.
