3. Briefly state the purpose of the position.
The BRI Biocontainment Laboratory Coordinator will coordinate biocontainment laboratory services for researchers at the Kansas State University Biosecurity Research Institute (KSU BRI), a biosafety level 3 and biosafety level 3Ag biocontainment research facility. This entails coordinating activities with research personnel, BRI Biosafety Officer, Biosafety Specialists, and Operations personnel, and the KSU Department of Environmental Health and Safety. This position will report issues with standard equipment or procedures to the Operations and Biosafety group for proper repair and corrective actions, and recommend changes that can improve the logistical support of the facility based on their knowledge of task and time management.

Create and manage inventory supply system for the BRI. Determine long and short term inventory needs based on research protocols, meetings with researchers and administrative staff. Coordinate use of BRI owned consumable and non-consumable equipment and supplies. Maintain inventories and ensure calibration and maintenance records for BRI owned laboratory equipment. Stock laboratories with basic supplies and materials. Ensure that locker rooms are stocked with laboratory clothing, personal protective equipment and basic supplies. Purchasing duties include ordering and billing users for supplies and equipment. Provide logistical support inside the biocontainment area. Coordinate laboratory check-in/check-out program. Maintain electronic inventory of all chemical and biohazardous materials at the BRI. Advise personnel required to complete inventories and ensure up to date and accurate records. |

Oversee decontamination of all materials exiting the biocontainment area. Coordinate autoclave validation and sterilization efficacy testing program. Sterilize biological waste out of the biocontainment areas. Advise users and monitor proper disposal streams for all hazardous waste generated at the BRI, including biological, chemical, sharps and radioactive materials, in coordination with BRI Biosafety professionals and KSU Department of Environmental Health and Safety. Decontaminate and launder laboratory clothing and towels. Respond to and assist with containment and clean-up of biohazardous material spills. Participate in decontamination of laboratories between occupancies. Recognize safety hazards and use proper procedures to mitigate risk to self and/or others. |

D. QUALIFICATIONS
1. Education Required
- Bachelor’s degree in biological or chemical sciences.

2. Experience Required
- Minimum two years research, teaching or diagnostic laboratory experience with emphasis in microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, public health or related field. Good understanding of the principles and practices used in biological and microbiological sciences.
- Minimum two years experience in application of biological safety principles and practices.
- Working knowledge of Windows-based software, including, word processing and spreadsheets.

3. Other Requirements
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects within the confines of time, budgets and available personnel.
- Superior organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work cooperatively with office staff, researchers, facilities design and maintenance personnel, laboratory technical staff, external contractors, etc.
- Willingness to learn and stay current in the rapidly advancing fields of biosafety and biocontainment.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to undergo and maintain a favorable background investigation and National Select Agent Registration security risk assessment. Ability to undergo and maintain a final US Government security clearance if required.
- Ability to pass a baseline physical.
- At least average agility required in order to maneuver on a daily basis between containment laboratories and support spaces and perform elevated work.
- Additional physical requirements may include carrying equipment and instrumentation (up to 50 lbs.), walking (up to 2 miles per day), standing (up to several hours), climbing and moving heavy objects (25-100 lbs.).
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment under extreme conditions of heat or cold. Protective equipment includes negative pressure respiratory protection, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), suits, gloves and boots.
- Ability to work in many and varied conditions, such as biohazardous spills, hazardous waste disposal, etc.
- This job has potential for safety hazard exposures and infectious disease exposure. Protective vaccines will be offered as needed.

4. Preferred Qualifications
- Five or more years research, teaching or diagnostic laboratory experience with emphasis in microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, public health or related field and a good understanding of scientific principles and practices.
- Experience applying working knowledge of regulatory requirements for biological materials and dealing with relevant federal, state and local regulatory agencies (DHS, DHHS, DOD, OSHA, USDA).
- Experience working in a biocontainment facility at biosafety level 3 or higher.

5. Salary or Range
$45,000-55,000
