Human parasitology laboratory tutorial

The photograph on the left is of a blood smear from an individual periodically undergoing fever spikes at approximately 72 hour intervals. Parasite numbers were extremely low, with very few cells on the slide appearing infected. Multiple smears over several days revealed the ring forms to be present for up to 48 hours before developing into more advanced stages. What species does this represent?

Babesia microti
Plasmodium falciparum
Plasmodium malariae
Plasmodium vivax
