Jana Fallin, University Distinguished Teaching
Scholar 2002-2003, currently serves as Chair of the Music Education
Division in the Music Department at Kansas State University in
Manhattan, Kansas. In her position, she teaches undergraduate
and graduate courses in music education which includes work with
student teachers, and directs the Kansas State University Summer
Symposium, now in the 16th year.
As a project for her year as University Distinguished Teaching Scholar, Dr. Fallin created a DVD, Engaging the Learner, which showcases outstanding teaching among selected K-State faculty. She is currently creating an additional two DVDs, one on research in teaching and one on the teaching of writing. Some of her current interests are the Theory of Multiple Intelligence of Howard Gardner, the research on the Brain and Music, creativity in teaching music and authentic cowboy music. She serves on the national board of the Society for General Music, within the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) organization.
Dr. Fallin has taught at Peabody College in Nashville Tennessee, Vanderbilt University, the University of Southwestern Louisiana, and the University of Northern Iowa before accepting her current position. She was selected as a Visiting Professor at Georgia State University and spent the spring 1999 quarter in Atlanta, Georgia, teaching in the Music Education Division. One of her current projects includes serving as Educational Consultant for a television/video production, Four Fish Fly Free.
Dr. Fallin graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and taught in the Austin, Texas, schools before returning to college to complete her graduate studies. She completed Masters and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas at Austin in Music, and began her collegiate teaching in Nashville at Peabody College. She has numerous publications in journals including Music Educators Journal and the Journal of Music Teacher Education, and is completing a textbook, Face the Music. She has twice been awarded the prestigious outstanding teaching award, the Stamey, at K-State, is listed in OutstandingWomen of America, and was an Outstanding Senior Woman at Baylor University. She is married to J. David Fallin, who teaches in the Marketing Department at Kansas State University and is President of Sunflower Consulting, Inc., and she is the mother of two sons, Daniel and Benjamin.
