Campaign Laws

As we head into election season, please remember that the law does not allow you to use your state job or state property in an election campaign. For example:

  1. It is illegal for a state employee to use his or her position of authority to influence another state employee to perform any political act. K.S.A. 75-2953(a).
  2. It is illegal for a state employee to use state property (including state-provided phone or e-mail) or his or her time on the job to advocate for or against a clearly identified candidate for office. K.S.A. 25-4169a.
  3. It is grounds for dismissal, demotion, or suspension for a classified state employee to use his or her time on the job, or state properties or facilities, in connection with a political campaign. K.S.A. 75-2949f.

Benefits EXPO October 2, 2008
The annual BENEFITS EXPO (formerly Benefits Fair) will be on October 2, 2008, in the K-State Student Union Ballroom with special events in Forum Hall. Representatives from Regents voluntary and mandatory retirement providers, KPERS, health insurance providers, life insurance companies associated with K-State, and many other agencies will be available in the Ballroom from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

OPEN ENROLLMENT HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS will be held at 9:00 a.m. and again at 3:00 p.m. in Forum Hall. The sessions are identical. This is an opportunity for employees to learn about the new non-tobacco user discount, review a new plan provider and other information for 2009. This valuable session will help employees complete the October online open enrollment process.

New this year, two RETIREMENT SEMINARS will be offered in Forum Hall. At 10:30 a.m.m Mr. Fred Brock, who holds the R.M. Seaton Professional Journalist Chair at K-State will present a special session on "Living Well and Retiring Well on Less Than You Think," based on his books, "Retire on Less than You Think: The New York Times Guide to Planning Your Financial Future" and "Health Care on Less Than You Think: The New York Times Guide to Getting Affordable Coverage."

At 12:30 p.m., Mr. Alan Schuler, KPERS Field Representative for the State of Kansas, will present a pre-retirement session for all KPERS members. This session is for those desiring information on KPERS calculations, time in service, and retirement dates. Employees within 5 years of their anticipated retirement will benefit most.

Another new benefit added this year is the availability of flu shots offered by Mercy Health Center for $20 at their booth.
