The Broughton Project

The Broughton Project is a local Kansas history project offering research, writing, and publishing opportunities to both undergraduates and graduates. Broughton, Kansas, was lost in 1965 to the Milford Reservoir, one of many such Big Dam communities displaced or submerged. Nine townsites in Riley County (Tuttle Creek Reservoir) and four in Clay County were affected. Few of these locales have written histories. In keeping with the mission of a land-grant college, the history department has committed to recovering the lived experiences of Kansas people in these places;  findings are often surprising, challenging some long-held ideas about western settlement.  Students interested in social, environmental, Kansas, and public history will enjoy being part of this project, which includes the taking of oral interviews.  The department offers a specific course on American community history and local research methodology to support the Broughton Project. It is now an on-going, expanding initiative in part supported by donors from these small, lost communities.
