Visiting Scholar Dr. Zhanhong You in Residence

Dr. Zhanhong You is an associate research fellow (equivalent to associate professor) in the Institute for History of Science and Technology & Ancient Texts at Tsinghua University. This semester he will be a visiting scholar in our Department. He received his Natural Science Doctor of History of Science and Technology from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2006 and spent a year as a visiting scholar at Technische Universität Berlin (2002-2003). He devoted himself to the First World War early in his career and wrote items on thirty main campaigns and six famous generals for the Chinese Military Encyclopedia, edited by the Chinese Military Academy. Afterwards he transferred his interest to the ancient and modern history of military technology in China. Presently his research focuses on the impulse of innovations in military science and technology to the development of economy and society, and the positive contribution of the Pugwash Movement (an international society of scientists against weapons of mass destruction and armed conflicts) to arms control, nuclear disarmament and world security during the Cold War. During his time at K-State he is investigating how American presidents’ science advisors (such as Jerome Wiesner and George Kistiakowsky) who attended the Pugwash conferences and meetings during the Cold War influenced the policy of arms control and nuclear disarmament.
