Libraries | K-State Student Union & Bookstore | Campus Police

Libraries. KSU Libraries assist students, faculty, state, community, and cooperating library users with their information needs through the acquisition, organization, and interpretation of text, electronic, and multi-media information resources. KSU Libraries support the instructional, research extension, service, and international program missions of Kansas State University by providing collections, access systems, consulting services, and access instruction. KSU Libraries provide easy access to collections, electronic data systems, study facilities, and consulting services through quality facilites.

K-State Libraries consists of five libraries: Hale Library, Weigel Library of Architecture, Planning and Design (Seaton Hall), Math/Physics Library (Cardwell Hall), Veterinary Medicine Library (Trotter Hall), and Fiedler Engineering Library (Fiedler Hall). K-State Salina Library Media Services is a cooperating library that shares integrated electronic access systems and databases.

Reference staff provide assistance in helping patrons access materials or information needed. Staff help initiate searches and assist with electronic resources.

Subject librarians, who are knowledgeable of the resources in a specific subject matter, assist patrons with their particular information needs. Subject librarians are available for one-on-one consultations or for groups and classes.

K-State Libraries offers state-of-the-art electronic data information retrieval systems for the catalog and databases unique to K-State's diverse academic areas. The Libraries' web site, http://www.lib.ksu.edu, provides information about its collections and services. Remote access to the libraries' electronic resources is available to K-State students.

Hale Library, the main library, maintains more than Hale Library 200 computer terminals for patrons to search and find the information they need. Other areas in Hale Library providing information or access services include Circulation, Interlibrary Services, Government Documents, Microforms, Special Collections and Reserves. The Lehner 24-hour study area provides computers, a printer, a copy machine and vending machines for your studying pleasure. Most services available at Hale Library are also available at the branch libraries.

Award-winning Hale Library is impressive with its seven-arch loggia entrance and six and seven-story towers topped with decorative finials. Oak hardwood floors and brass handrails adorn the interior finishes. The carved and etched limestone facings, sculpted metal banisters and door ornamentations depict native Kansas plants, trees, shrubs, and wildlife. The largest academic building on campus with nearly 400,000 square feet, centrally located on KSU's Manhattan campus, Hale Library is the academic heart of Kansas State University. Student Union and Bookstore. The K-State Student Union is the campus center for social, recreational, educational, and cultural activities. This 260,000 square foot multipurpose facility opened in March 1956 and is supported only by generated revenue and student fees. The Student Union embarked on a $11.5 million renovation in May 1998 was completed in July 2000.

The K-State Student Union was built entirely by student fees. It features a full-service Bookstore and a food service Student Union operation that includes the Bluemont Buffet, Caribou Coffee, and catering for events hosted in the Union. Additionally, a food court offers menu items from Chick-fil-A, Taco Bell, Panda Express, Noble Roman's Pizza, Sandwich Central, Market Carvery, and a bakery and salad bar.

The Student Union has a recreation area complete with bowling, billiards, video games, proshop, and engraving and metal photo services. The Subway Sandwich Shop is located in this area. An art gallery, information counter, convenience store, computer store, full-service campus Commerce Bank, computer lab, copy center, campus ID card center, postal center, ATM machines, two auditoriums, campus vending services, and reservation and conference services are also located in the Student Union.

Union Program Council (UPC) is the student volunteer arm of the K-State Student Union. UPC provides more than 350 programs each year for the social, cultural, educational and personal growth of students. The Office of Student Activities and Services is located on the ground floor of the Union.

Campus Police. The University Police Department is responsible for the protection of all properties owned and operated by the state educational institution or its affiliates. This authority is granted under state law. While service to the K-State community is of great concern to the department, the prevention of crime and investigation of all reported crimes is also of prime importance.

The department assists with parking control and regulates traffic control. Traffic and parking regulations are established by a student/faculty/staff Traffic and Parking Council, by authority of K.S.A.-74:3211.

The department is responsible for providing physical security on campus property. This includes opening and closing buildings, monitoring security cameras, and maintaining 23 emergency telephones strategically located throughout the University.

The University Police Department is open 24 hours a day. It provides a contact for emergency repairs and acts as the University operator outside normal business hours. The department has sworn police officers on duty 24 hours a day. Home Page: http://www.ksu.edu/police
