Babcock is Professor of Economics. In a 24 year career at KSU he has published more than fifty articles in professional journals, along with numerous monographs and technical reports. He has been principal investigator or co-investigator on 19 Federal and State government research grants totaling more than $1 million. Babcock is recognized as a leading national and international authority in two research areas--intermodal competition in the intercity freight transportation markets and the impact of public policy on transportation market shares.

Babcock has received numerous national awards for his transportation research. In 1987, the Transportation Research Forum awarded him (with Ken Lemke) the A.T. Kearney Prize for outstanding research on railroad mergers. In 1989, Babcock received the A.T. Kearney Award (with Wade German) from the Transportation Research Forum for outstanding research on multi-service transportation systems. In 1990, he received (with Wade German) the United Parcel Service Foundation Award for outstanding research in intermodal transportation. In 1994, he received the Burlington Northern Railroad Award from the Transportation Research Forum for outstanding research in agricultural transportation.
