"I think the students are getting an excellent chance to be involved in the language and to get a feel for the culture behind it...lots better than having a lab with earphones and simply repeating words and phrases. It keeps them moving along and they have to stay on task."

Nancy Rush
St. John High School,
Beloit, KS

Thank you for your interest in SVS High School Spanish! Chuck Thorpe, our instructor, along with the staff of the Kansas Regents Educational Communications Center (ECC) invite you to explore the strengths and flexibility of our program, now in its second decade! Since 1989, SVS has grown to meet the needs of its participating schools. It's in that tradition that we announce the following significant changes.

COURSE DELIVERY - SVS videolessons will be provided only on DVD. Schools no longer need satellite equipment, just a DVD player hooked to the monitor. INTERACTION - All SVS class sections will have regularly scheduled phone lessons with Spanish-speaking staff.

On this website you’ll find essential information describing the course and its objectives, along with a copy of the Participation Agreement*, School Enrollment Form*.

You have everything you need to make your decision right now about putting SVS High School Spanish into your curriculum this Fall.

SVS Course Format
Spanish I and II are full-year, five-day per week courses for high school credit. Videolessons are provided and are typically watched on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the school's assigned Teaching Partner conducting class on MWF using the training, lesson plans, activities, and support provided by SVS.

SVS High School Spanish works to meet individual state requirements, so that participating schools can offer Spanish I & II as full year courses for high school credit.

The SVS learning experience is enhanced through a variety of instructional media.

textbooks and workbooks audio listening activities
DVD videolessons interactive phone lessons

SVS course content is comparable to traditional beginning Spanish courses. Students learn to communicate with people of the Spanish-speaking world through instruction and practice in the four basic skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Both Spanish I and II emphasize cultural awareness.

Two 45-minute videolessons, provided on DVD, are presented each Tuesday and Thursday.

Students and instructors interact
During each semester, regularly scheduled phone lessons provide interaction and practice between students and SVS staff. On non-videolesson days, a classroom Teaching Partner conducts learning activities developed and provided by the SVS instructor. In addition, a toll-free telephone number is provided to make it easy for the SVS instructor and staff to interact first-hand with the Teaching Partner and students at anytime during the day, M-F, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm CST.
