Scholarships Available through DSS

Kansas State University offers scholarship opportunities to students with disabilities. Scholarship funding is available to students with disabilities through Educational Opportunity Funds, departmental funds and private scholarship funds. K-State students with all types of disabilities including physical, learning, sensory, psychological, and chronic health impairments may be eligible.

How to Apply

All K-State students must complete and submit a K-State Scholarship application. Application forms are available from the Office of Student Financial Assistance, 104 Fairchild Hall, or apply electronically at the K-State Scholarship Application web page.Students should check the appropriate box on the application for “learning disability” (includes ADHD) or “physical disability” (this category includes all other types of disabilities including vision or hearing impairments, psychological disabilities, Asperger’s Syndrome, etc.)

Deadlines

In order to qualify for scholarships, prospective and incoming freshmen students must be admitted to the University and have completed a K-State scholarship application by November 1. Priority date for current students and transfer students is February 1. Some scholarships who have a “physical” disability also require the student to submit a brief essay (50 words) describing their disability and how it impacts their lives and their need for financial assistance, as well as their future goals. Students not registered with DSS should also submit disability documentation as proof of disability.

  • James K. Shaver Scholarship
  • Academic Promise Scholarship
  • Educational Opportunity Funds

Scholarship Process

A Scholarship Committee composed of K-State faculty, graduate students and staff from Disability Support Services screens all applications. The Committee will review each student's essay (if required), grade point average and financial need to determine the best candidates for each scholarship.

All scholarship recipients will receive a letter informing them of their selection. Recipients will be asked to notify Disability Support Services of their acceptance of the scholarship on a return form.

Scholarships are not automatically renewed. However, applicants are eligible for scholarships in subsequent years and are encouraged to reapply.

A good reference tool for students with disabilities seeking scholarships is the book Financial Aid for the Disabled and Their Families, 2004-2006 by Gail A. Schlachter and R. David Weber, available at K-State's Hale Library.

A good online resource can be found on the University of Washington's DO-IT website at http://www.washington.edu/doit/Brochures/Academics/financial-aid.html.
