Wireless Computer Network

Wireless networking to the Internet provides a new level of mobility and convenience. It allows laptops, personal digital assistants, and other portable computing devices to link to the Internet without being physically tied to an Ethernet connection line.

In fall 2001, K-State began implementing a campus wireless network (WLAN, or Wireless LAN) based on IEEE's 802.11b standard. The goal is to allow any student or employee with a valid K-State eID to access the university's wireless network with the appropriate hardware and configuration.

This website covers what is needed, locations where wireless computing is available, and the process to use K-State's wireless network. An interim policy governing wireless computing at K-State is available at www.k-state.edu/cns/policy/wireless.html while K-State's Information Resource Management Council (IRMC) finalizes a permanent policy.

Getting started

To get access to K-State's wireless network, you must
  • Have a laptop computer or personal digital assistant with the ability to add a wireless card
  • Have a properly configured 802.11b wireless networking card. Computing and Network Services recommends a Cisco Aironet 350 series card, although a Lucent card is acceptable. See the card-configuration instructions.
  • Find an area where the wireless network is available. See the wireless locations at K-State.
