Notes from the March 5, 2008 Classified Senate Meeting

Gary Leitnaker, HR, reported that the parking garage project is about 30 days behind schedule. Projected finish date for the project is February 2009. The shuttle system seems to be workingThe search for Joe Younger's replacement continues. Training for supervisors on the new Discipline without Punishment policy begins soon. Employee Relations will be conducting these sessions.

Classified Senate discussed and voted to unanimously support HB2916.

Campus Affairs Committee reported on administrative leave issues in regards to inclement weather. Next meeting will be on March 19 at noon in 107 Akert.

Legislative Affairs Committee reported on the Senate and officer election processes. There are currently 8 Senate positions open: 1 in Agriculture & Extension, 1 in Education (Janel Harder is eligible for another term), 1 in Hale Library (Connie Kissee is eligible for another term), 1 in KSU Salina, 2 in Administration & Finance, and 2 in Institutional Advancement (Barbara Nagel & Carol Marden are eligible for another term). Officer elections will be held at the April Senate meeting and Senator nominations are now in progress. Colleges and Administrative Units that have Senator vacancies have been sent a form for nominations which are due back to Conniee Kissee by April 4, 2008. In May a ballot will go out to the same Colleges and Administrative Units for a vote on the nominations submitted for Senator vacancies. If you have any questions concerning Senator elections, contact Conniee Kissee at 2-0551 or wildkats@ksu.edu. Being on Senate is a great way to get involved with classified issues and have the opportunity to make a difference at K-State.

Recognition Ceremony Committee will be setting up on April 1, 2008 at 10am for the ceremony, which is April 2 in the Union Ballroom. Senators are encouraged to help set-up as their schedules allow. A sign up sheet was passed around for Senators to sign-up for different duties the day of the ceremony. Next year's ceremony will be April 8, 2009 in McCain Auditorium. The committee asked for the Public Relations Committee's help with a flyer about the ceremony to send to all classified employees. Awards have been received and checked, invitations to special guests have been sent, and the program has been proofed and ready to send to K-State Printing Services. The next meeting is March 17, 2008 at noon. Room to be announced.

The Public Relations Committee reported that the next ROAR will be May 1, 2008. Please submit your articles by the end of April. Barb Nagel reported the positive feedback she has received from Administration on the quality of content and the professional look of the ROAR.

Under Old Business, the Senate discussed the proposal for Board of Regents Representation Council for the Kansas Council of Classified Senates. Senate voted unanimously to support the proposal. Barb Nagel and Mary Conley, Emporia State University, will attend the March Regents board meeting on March 13, 2008 in which final action by the board will be taken. (This proposal was unanimously approved by the Board of Regents on March 13, 2008.) The proposal establishes a Board Council for KCCS to report to the Board of Regents twice a year and provides a conduit for engagement with the Board on classified issues.

Under New Business, Barb Nagel reported she will testify before the Special Committee on State Employee Pay Plan regarding HB2916. (You should have already received an update concerning this.) Senate also discussed parking issues related to inclement weather. Parking tickets are being issued during inclement weather conditions in which lines are not visible when the car was originally parked. Senate voted to send a letter to the parking council in regards to this matter for further review.

Next meeting is April 9, 2008 in KSSU room 212 at 12:45pm.
