Calendar for the Summer 2008 REU Program

March 1 Deadline for receipt of application materials at Kansas State University
March 8 Offers of internships will be made to prospective REU students
March 15 Deadline for acceptance of offers to participants
April to May REU students and mentors should communicate and discuss possible research topics for the summer field season.
May 24-25 REU students arrive in Manhattan, Kansas over Memorial Day Weekend.  Weekend orientation activities will include arrangements of accommodation, a campus tour and an introduction to research activities in the Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) program. Campus orientation activities will include tours of the Division of Biology buildings, library and other campus facilities.  Introductions to Konza Prairie Biological Station will include information on the rules for use of the field site by all investigators and a demonstration of basic techniques for combating wildfires.
May 26 Students begin field work for independent research projects. 
June/July Weekly research seminar in grassland ecology commences.  Field trips to ecologically important sites in Kansas, natural history museums and other activities.
August 1 Students will give oral presentations of their research results in the annual REU Student Research Symposium
August 2-3 End of the Summer 2007 REU Program, program evaluations will be completed by all participants
