RE: Increase in Graduate Student Salary

This memo is a follow-up to my announcement at the Thursday, February 8, 2001 Faculty Meeting that we are increasing graduate student salaries again beginning August 01 (i.e., for the fall 01 semester).

Graduate Student Instructional Obligation. It has been recognized that the long-standing obligation of all graduate students in the Division to teach 6-8 contact hrs/week each semester has unofficially and informally eroded in recent years. To meet the existing obligation, all graduates students will receive assignments of 6 contact hrs/wk per semester for all future semesters.

The Basic Salary Rate for Division of Biology Graduate Students

The old rate shown here is the current rate (i.e., the one that began in January 01), while the new rate becomes effective first semester of the next academic year (i.e., August 01). The changes shown here have no impact on graduate students already receiving more than the current base rate of $14,204 per year.

GTAs Academic Year (20 biweekly pay periods)

Current/New AY Rate = $470x20 periods = $9,400

GRAs Academic Year (20 biweekly pay periods)

* Note to Faculty with GRAs

The new annual total of $15,042, including the $832 total increment, should be accounted for in your existing and/or new grants. You will also continue to have a fringe benefit cost and the State share of the optional graduate student health insurance.

*Note to Faculty with GTAs

The new annual total of $15,042 includes the academic year amount of $10,000 and the academic year tuition waiver value of $2,042, both covered by our KSU budget. Summer funding (6 biweeklies) continues to be your responsibility. At the increased rate, the summer amount will be $3,000 for summer, plus fringe benefits and share of the optional health insurance.
