Subject: Release of NGAWANG CHOEKYI
Dear President:
In May of 1992, your nation's security forces arrested Ngawang Choekyi and 13 other nuns from Toelung Nyen Nunnery for participating in a pro-independence demonstration in Lhasa, Tibet. These 14 nuns were sentenced to 5 years imprisonment in Drapchi Prison. In 1993, Ngawang Choekyi and the 13 other nuns were convicted of having composed and recorded pro-independence songs in prison; their sentences were increased by eight years.
Amnesty International believes these nuns are prisoners of conscience, wrongly imprisoned for the peaceful exercise of the right to freedom of conscience and expression. Furthermore, we do not believe anything approaching a fair and just trial was conducted, as your trial procedures do not meet the minimum standards for fair trial set out in international human rights standards.
Ngawang Choekyi and the 13 other nuns mentioned above have not used or advocated violence in their free expression. We request an immediate, unconditional release of Ngawang Choekyi and the 13 other nuns imprisoned with her.
We request an immediate end to human rights violations in Tibet.
Thank you for your time and consideration in this important matter.
Sincerely,
AI Group 254
