Senior Research Project

A senior research project is a requirement of the American Ethnic Studies Program and is the culmination of the student's participation in this unique program. Its purpose is to enable each student to embark upon a self- designed path to understanding of these important and timely issues. The project provides student with an opportunity to work with a self-elected faculty member in the American Ethnic Studies Program in order to refine and personalize their understanding of and relationship to the issue of ethnicity in the United States. Following are the steps involved in preparing a Senior Research Project in AMETH:

  • Sign up for AMETH 499 and attend class.
  • Arrange for a project advisor: This faculty member should be a part of the AMETH Program.
  • Choose a subject.
  • Write a prospectus: once the student and project advisor have agreed on a project topic the student prepares a two-page (maximum) written prospectus for presentation in class.
  • Work on the project: realistically speaking, the student should plan on spending about six hours per week on the project. Meetings with the project advisor and with the class are included in this estimate.
  • Turn in the final product to the AMETH office. Generally the project is turned in two weeks prior to the end of the semester. The form of the final product will vary depending on the specific nature of the project itself. However, some general guidelines can be given. Most research papers, for example, are about 25-30 pages (6,000-7,000 words).
