Scholarships

The Wayne C. Rohrer Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established in memory of Wayne C. Rohrer. Dr. Rohrer was a professor of Sociology at KSU from 1959 until his death in 1987. To commemorate Dr. Rohrer's lifelong commitment to fairness and equality in racial and ethnic relations in the United States, the scholarship has been earmarked for students who are secondary major sin American Ethnic Studies at KSU. Students wishing to apply for the Wayne C. Rohrer Scholarship should apply to Student Financial Assistance. It is awarded annually and applications must be received in the AMETH business office by deadline indicated on application.

The Yvonne V. Lacy Scholarship

There are two Yvonne V. Lacy Scholarships. One is a Charitable Gift Annuity Scholarship and it is not awarded. The other is an annually funded and awarded scholarship.

Qualifications for the annually awarded scholarship are similar to those for the Wayne C. Rohrer Scholarship with the additional stipulation that first preference is for students who were formerly in Head Start. Applications for the annually awarded scholarship must be received in the AMETH office early Spring each year.

Application for either scholarship consists of a written statement describing one's academic and career goals, a transcript indicating GPA and enrollment in AMETH, and evidence of participation in the AMETH program and activities. Awards are announced by mid-March. Recipients are expected to attend the AMETH awards banquet in the Spring and may bring a guest.

At the 10th annual AMETH awards banquet in April, 1997, KSU President Jon Wefald pledged additional funds from his office to raise both the Wayne C. Rohrer and the Yvonne V. Lacy scholarships to $1000 per year, beginning with the awarding of the 1997-98 scholarships.

Anyone wishing to contribute to either scholarship should send a check, payable to "The KSU Foundation (indicate which scholarship)," to the American Ethnic Studies Program, Kansas State University, 3 Leasure Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506.
